Can Reiki be done virtually?

People are often surprised to learn that Reiki can be done remotely, and can even feel stronger than an in-person treatment. Founded in the 1920s by Master Usui, the traditional Reiki system highlights Distance Reiki as a cornerstone practice. This technique allows me as the practitioner to transmit Reiki without you needing to be in the same room or geographic location. Distance Reiki works on the idea that energy and intention are not limited by time or space. Reiki can be sent across any distance—whether to someone far away, to a past event, or even to a future situation. At Clarion Vitality you have the option of choosing in-person treatments at my wellness studio or from the comfort of your own home with a Distance Reiki treatment, conducted via Zoom.

What should I expect from a Distance Reiki treatment?

First you will schedule a time and date online for the session. Although it is not a requirement of how Distance Reiki works, by setting up a specific time you can be in a receptive state (such as lying down or meditating during the treatment) and the physical benefits can be felt by you. The hour session begins on a Zoom call. If this is your first Distance Reiki session with me, we will discuss the in-take form that was sent to you prior to our session. Next, we will discuss what you want the session to support and any relevant details about your current state of health and well-being. This pre-treatment portion lasts for approximately 15-20 minutes. At this point we will end the call, and I will begin the transmission of sending gentle Reiki energy. It is recommended that you find a comfortable place to sit or lay and close your eyes if that feels comfortable. Head support is recommended so you can relax more easily. You may choose to listen to music or a guided meditation or simply sit with what comes up for you in the peaceful silence. Alternately, if we haven't met before I may ask in advance for you to send me a photo of yourself along with any intention you have of what you want the session to support (e.g. a physical/health issue, specific goal, or relationship challenge). Having these details will help me to connect to you ahead of time, without us meeting in person. Reiki energy begins to start working in the background from the minute that you book your session. On a subconscious level we are already connected through our shared intention of the upcoming session and being able to call you to mind from a photo helps strengthen that energetic connection. The treatment will last for approximately 45 minutes. You can set a timer so you know when we have finished or you can continue to relax and end your session at a time that feels comfortable for you. When I have finished the transmission I will take 15-20 minutes to compile my insights and reflections from our session and any impressions I may have been shown, and I will send you by email a one-page summary of our session together within 2-3 hours of our session being complete.

How should I prepare for a Reiki treatment? 

Whether you're about to receive Reiki in-person or distantly, there are a number of things you can do before hand to prepare for our session together. For either type of session please dress comfortably in loose fitting clothing - you will remain fully clothed at all times during your treatment. If you are someone who runs cold, I would recommend layering your clothing - sitting/laying for any extended period of time can significantly lower your body temperature and I want you to remain at a comfortable temperature throughout your treatment. Sheets and blankets are provided for in-person sessions and there is also the option of using a weighted blanket. All in-person treatments take place on top of a PEMF mat that is lightly heated. If this is not something you would like, please mention it and we can turn off the heating element. Eating before a treatment is encouraged but please reframe from indulging in a big or rich meal as this can disrupt the flow of energy throughout the body. Stay hydrated, especially after a treatment. Water will be provided for you, or you are welcome to bring your own beverage. Please try and abstain from drinking caffeine 1-2 hours before and after your treatment. If your treatment is distant, you can prepare your space ahead of time to create a calm and relaxing environment. Lighting candles, listening to instrumental music or meditating can all help you relax and clear your mind.

What if I can't relax during a treatment?

Depending on the reason(s) that brought you to Reiki, it may not be possible for you to fully relax and turn off your inner dialogue, and that is OK. I meet you at exactly where you're at in your journey and there is no right way to show up for Reiki. If you cannot fully relax and unwind during our session it doesn't mean that it hasn't been successful or that healing isn't taking place. Allow yourself grace to show up in whatever form is necessary - you are exactly where you need to be.

How should I expect to feel during and after a Reiki treatment?

Your experience can differ from session to session. Sensations that you may feel in, on or around your body while receiving a Reiki session are heat, coolness, tingling, pulsation, wave-like movement or flow. Healing responses during a Reiki treatment may include kinesthetic reactions in your body, emotional release, or an increase in the activity of your thoughts. Afterwards, clients report an unusually peaceful and calm state of mind. For instance, many say they feel as if they’ve just returned from a long vacation – expanding their inner awareness, setting them on a path of transformation and growth. Those who come in with physical pain or discomfort leave feeling significant relief, because worry, fear, and anxiety melt away during the Reiki treatment. At the end of every treatment I will finish by grounding your energy back into your body at your feet. You will then be given a few minutes to feel and ease back into your body and to ground yourself. It is not uncommon to feel a little lightheaded after a treatment and this will usually abate after 15-30 minutes. Clients find drinking a tall glass of water helps and getting outside. It is important to note that the effects of Reiki will continue long after the treatment has ended. You may notice thoughts or emotions rising to the surface or you may recall a memory that had been long since forgotten. Give your loving awareness to these feelings and sensations and allow them to move through you without judgement or shame.
